Correspondence with Mrs. Simcoe [Elizabeth Postuma Simcoe]

1838-1845

In a short note, dated November 1, 1838, Elizabeth Kerr presents Mrs. Simcoe with a biography of her father Joseph Brant. A draft of a response, dated May 21 1839, thanking Mrs. Kerr for the gift, is written by Elizabeth Simcoe on the back of an envelope. In her letter, Elizabeth Simcoe mentions the high esteem in which her husband, John Graves Simcoe, held Kerr's father, and asks for news about Canada. In a letter of October 22, 1840, Elizabeth Kerr thanks Simcoe for the gift of a Bible. A manuscript by an unidentified author, possibly a Mrs. Green, wife of the pastor of the church at Wellington Square, describes the illness and death of Elizabeth Kerr and her husband in 1845. The account includes descriptions of the four Kerr children and of Elizabeth's Indian relatives who gathered at her deathbed.
